This project enabled the client to provide high quality education facilities for the Construction and Engineering Departments at the Broadwater Campus. The works were carried out over two phases and involved the demolition of sub-standard accommodation and the construction of an extension too, and the refurbishment of, Block E on this campus.

The extension provided a new Teaching Classroom, Mechanical Workshop, CAD/CAM Workshop and Classroom, Staff Room and entrance lobby. The remainder of Block E was refurbished with mechanical services up-graded and electrical and IT services completely renewed.

Asbestos was present throughout the existing building and was either removed and disposed of under controlled conditions or encapsulated as works allowed. The impact of the asbestos had a major impact on the programme which was mitigated by re-sequencing of elements of work.

The external spaces adjacent to the works were re-ordered to provide an improved material delivery area and external covered areas for the teaching of wet trades. The scheme was designed to achieve a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’
