Brighton Toy & Model Museum

Pilbeam were asked to transform the entrance and approach to Brighton’s legendary Toy and Model Museum, housed in Early Victorian railway arches underneath Brighton Station – and home to one of the finest public collections of toys and models in the world. The aim was to make the museum easier for visitors to spot and increase footfall.

We installed a 20-foot glazed entrance in one of the arches on Trafalgar Street as well as improving lighting in the underpass, which now features Victorian-style lanterns, specially commissioned brass fittings inspired by the Southern Railway – and architectural lighting designed by iGuzzini. The new shopfront installation is fully draught proofed, significantly reducing heat loss from the building.

In addition, we constructed new insulated brick walls on either side of the entrance door to further improve thermal performance, using ceramic-faced brickwork to remain in keeping with the overall aesthetic.

The exhibits at the museum, which remained open during the project, needed to be protected during the works and security maintained.

The project was made possible thanks to fundraising and support from museum partners, including the Railway Heritage Trust.
